Bistro Maxine – Finding Paris in Palo Alto

DSC02582

Paris influence has come to Palo Alto, in the form of “Bistro Maxine”. Their slogan in the menu is “Find Paris in Palo Alto”. So what do you get? Crepes! We tried their savory crepe called Maxine (we thought this Crepe should live up to name right?) and the standard sweet Banana and Nutella crepe. Maxine is an egg, spinach, mushrooms, swiss cheese crepe. Overall, the food is pretty standard crepe. Now, there are two interesting parts. First, the location, Palo Alto is a nice place to have a change of environment and you can take a walk afterwards. Second, the price is not that expensive, certainly cheaper than other crepe places like crepevine.

One of our favorite Mexican restaurant: Sancho’s Taqueria! If you live in San Francisco Bay Area, this is a must-go for Mexican food. Enjoy (fried) fish taco and shrimp taco goodness to the max in this place. They have several locations in bay area and the one we tried was in Redwood City.

Pieology sells custom pizzas and salads. They even have steps on how to order your personal/custom pizza, similar to Subway. To order your pizza, you have to select your crust, sauce, cheeses & meats and toppings. You can also select the premade pizza like we do. We ordered Alfredo’s Alfredo:

Pancho Villa Taqueria

When you are in San Mateo, the choice is pretty obvious, it’s time for Pancho Villa Taqueria! We ordered Combo Dinner #3, which is Quesadillas Shrimp and Steak for $11. Note that even though the menu says it’s Steak, it actually means meat, so you still need to choose your own meat (chicken, steak, pork, etc2). The food came out to be pretty decent, especially the shrimp was so yummy. Note that they only give you a little of chips, you have to pay more to get more chips. Money saving tip: since the portion is big enough, you can actually share the food for two.

New TLT BBQ in San Mateo

DSC02514

San Mateo is famous with changing restaurants every year or two, probably because of the high rent? Anyway, we tried the newly open TLT BBQ in San Mateo (TLT BBQ has another branch in East Bay, Newark). They serve Chinese style skewers and actually tasted pretty good. The charcoal/burnt smell of a-choy (Vegetable A) and chickenmeat skewers are some of the things you should try. You might compare this with the other yakitori style place in San Mateo (Yakitori Kokko); they certainly have different styles and this place has better value in terms of goodness per dollar. We spent about $11.50 per person, including tax and tips and we were pretty full. Another thing, it might be better if you come with someone that can speak Chinese because it’s easier to communicate.

In the beginning, let there be Ramen!

Hello world, we are excited to publish our very first post! We will share the latest and greatest about anything related to living in San Francisco Bay Area. It could be our latest craze about food, tips on saving money and how to get deals, interesting places that you can explore. Basically, anything that we feel can enhance your experience living in San Francisco Bay Area.

Our first post is about food, Ramen! Ramen has become a trend in bay area. Couple years ago, there’s only a few ramen shops, but currently, there’s numerous places selling great and tasty Ramen!

Let us introduce our first recommendation for Ramen: Ramen Halu!

If you are bored with the standard Sho-yu, Shio or Garlic Pork Ramen, you should definitely try another variant: Tsuke-men a.k.a Dipping Ramen.  The noodles are boiled to the balanced tenderness level, not too hard and not too soft. The dipping sauce flavor is not too intense, providing you the light-weight Ramen that’s good and easy for stomach. Give it a try when you have chance and let us know what you think!
